Grizzly bears, Arctic foxes, Siberian cranes, river otters and, of course, snow leopards love the cold — they enjoy chilly, snow-free days and playfully romp around snow-covered spaces when the white stuff falls. Winter truly transforms the zoo into a wild wonderland for many of the animals. When the temperature drops, Bo, the Tulsa Zoo’s red panda, is especially happy to frolic around – Bo is only viewable during cooler months. Native to the Himalayas, red pandas have a charming, kitten-like face. Their short, fluffy ears and little nose, plus their fluffy ringed tail and thick double- layered coat, all serve as barriers to the cold. The red panda and binturongs — also called bearcats — share the Lobeck Taylor Family Foundation Red Panda/Binturong Exhibit and Aviary. Binturongs are a climbing species that thrive in hot weather, while red pandas prefer the cold. To ensure zoo guests are always seeing an active animal, the Tulsa Zoo designed a rotational exhibit for these two species – a first, to the zoo’s knowledge. “We are rebuilding the Tulsa Zoo to offer our guests improved year-round viewing and educational opportunities,” says Lindsay Hutchison, Tulsa Zoo vice president of philanthropy and community engagement. “Many zoo habitats are climate controlled, so SEASONAL | B Y K A L L E B U R G E S S | P H O T O S C O U R T E S Y O F T U L S A Z O O M This Winter, Visit the Zoo! Guests will receive half off regular admission when Tulsa’s projected high temperature is 50 degrees Fahrenheit or below. Snow Leopard Days will be determined by close of business the day prior, based on projections from WeatherOps. Check zoo social media and website for updates. The Tulsa Zoo will determine eligible discount days before 5 p.m. the day prior. Discounts are available only on announced dates. Not valid with other offers or for special events.
